Fertility & IVF Support

Fertility & IVF Support

Acupuncture for fertility problems has become a popular choice for many couples experiencing difficulty conceiving. Growing infertility rates are largely due to modern lifestyle factors such as financial or work related stress, poor sleep and dietary factors, and choosing to start families later in life. Couples seeking IVF treatment invest an immense amount of time, money and energy into the process of conceiving and so adjunct methods of support are often sought.

The popularity of Chinese Medicine, including acupuncture has grown for a number of reasons. Firstly, acupuncture provides a natural and non invasive option for emotional and other health issues which affect fertility. Secondly, though Western Medicine processes such as IVF have some wonderful success rates, the process is emotionally taxing and the physical side effects are harsh. Acupuncture is a relaxing and inexpensive treatment to complement IVF treatment and outcomes.

Although earlier systematic reviews found mixed or unclear evidence for the effectiveness of acupuncture used to support IVF and other reproductive technology, a more recent systematic review by Qian et al (2016), Therapeutic effect of acupuncture on the outcomes of in vitro fertilization: a systematic review and meta-analysis, found that “Based on an analysis of the studies, acupuncture improves CPR (clinical pregnancy rates) among women undergoing IVF.”

A 2015 study by Shen et al, The role of acupuncture in in vitro fertilization: a systematic review and meta-analysis, showed that although acupuncture did not significantly improve the IVF clinical pregnancy rate when performed only at the time of embryo transfer, there was “a pooled benefit of acupuncture for IVF when performed at follicle phase and 25 min before and after embryo transfer, as well as 30 min after embryo transfer and implantation phase.”
